Today’s journal marketplace is in a very different position than it was five years ago, with publishers and libraries openly experimenting with different models that carry with them a hope or a promise of a transition away from the traditional reader-pays model and the prevailing author-pays open access model. Press releases from publishers, libraries, and consortia herald transformation and new and exciting approaches, but the reality is far more complicated. This panel will bring together perspectives from research universities, small liberal arts colleges, and publishers to discuss and explore disparate perspectives and approaches to these emerging models. Panelists will discuss their current approaches, where they see the marketplace headed, the obstacles they see facing publishers and libraries, and whether any of the approaches in the marketplace truly address the crises that continue to plague scholarly communication.
